The River Protection Strategy will:
- provide an overarching “blueprint” to guide future management
- protect and enhance the ecological health and community’s enjoyment of the Swan Canning river system
The strategy aims to achieve better coordination and collaboration between management and community organisations, using a whole-of-system approach.
Preparation of the River Protection Strategy is underway now.
Why do we need it?
There are many organisations separately managing different aspects and areas of the Swan and Canning rivers and foreshores without a shared vision or overarching plan. These include:
- Swan River Trust
- other State Government organisations
- local government authorities
- re-development authorities with river foreshore and parks management responsibilities
- other non-government organisations and individuals with decision-making influence
What will it deliver?
The River Protection Strategy will improve protection of the Swan Canning Riverpark by establishing coordinated management arrangements.
It will state how all parties with management responsibilities will work together.
The River Protection Strategy will provide an overarching plan at a whole-of-system level, indicating:
- what needs protecting
- where and how people can responsibly use and enjoy the rivers without causing harm
- policy positions for each stretch of river
How is the River Protection Strategy developed and maintained?
The River Protection Strategy meets the requirements of the Swan and Canning Rivers Management Act 2006 by being built on ecological and community values.
The strategy sets out how these values are to be protected by establishing issues, priorities, responsibilities and key strategies.
It will be implemented through management programs that show what actions are to be taken to achieve its targets.
Implementation of the management actions will be monitored, analysed and reported to Government at least biennially.
The Act also requires a review of the River Protection Strategy and management programs every five years.
