Two Year Five St Hilda’s students have won the regional division of the primary school (years 4 – 7) category of the Ribbons of Blue competition: Water and our changing climate.
Alisa Dowson and Georgina McCabe won the Swan River Trust’s regional competition for their short film ‘Our rivers our future’ that showed the connection between climate change, the river and water conservation.
Students were asked to produce a community service announcement that provided a clear message showing how water is a natural resource and how climate change might impact their local catchment.
Trust Ribbons of Blue coordinator Angela Petrow said the competition provided students with a fun and engaging experience to explore the impacts of climate change in their own backyard.
“The winners of the Swan Canning Catchment competition stood out for their ability to link climate change to our rivers and show the potential impacts,” Mrs Petrow said.
A number of other St Hilda’s students were also highly commended including:
- Isabel Kasten, Victoria Allen and Isabel Rowley with ‘Save it - don’t waste it’
- Alice White with ‘Human impact on the Swan River’
- Henrietta Grayling with ‘Save our Swan’
Alisa and Georgina won a $50 voucher each for Australian Geographic stores and their class will go to Scitech to experience the Climate Change exhibition.
The regional winners progress to state judging to be announced during National Water Week 18 - 24 October 2009.
